Battlefield 6 Release Date, ‘Sims’ Movie Update From EA Entertainment President

Electronic Arts revealed Thursday that its eagerly anticipated “Battlefield 6” will be released Oct. 10. As the larger gaming community is sure to clock, that portion of the calendar was previously penciled in for “Grand Theft Auto 6.”

But EA Entertainment president Laura Miele says a lot of thought went in to exactly when to launch the expansive next chapter in the “Battlefield” franchise, well before Take-Two Interactive’s Rockstar had moved the game out of that slot to next May.

“We have always have been heads down, unblinking about this fall and executing at a level of excellence,” Miele told Variety Thursday ahead of the “Battlefield 6” release date announcement. “So we really worked hard with our team and with ourselves, candidly, to not get distracted by what was happening around us. But we always said that with all of this investment and with all the potential of this franchise, we would not have put it in harm’s way, and we would not have put it out in the blast radius of something really large. So we had our eye on it, for sure, and we were thinking about scenarios, but we were pretty unblinking, and we weren’t allowing ourselves to play the ‘what if?’ game with the schedules and development. We were like, no, we have to get this done, because the opportunity is so big and the potential is so significant for the company.”

But “Battlefield 6” is far from the only thing Miele has to talk about these days.

While EA has remained largely mum and very teasing on its upcoming multiplayer offering for “The Sims” franchise, Miele confirms it now “represents one of the biggest growth opportunities for Electronic Arts” moving forward and the team is “hard at work and feverishly developing what this [multiplayer] platform is going to be.”

“What we’re doing is upgrading and refreshing all this technology, and we’ll be adding modes of play — but we also are going to be creating and updating the base technology and the base user experience on the core game,” Miele said. “So you’re going to have this life simulation, you’re going to have multiplayer capabilities, we are going to have mobile expressions of this. We’re doing cozy games as well and more to come on that. We did a release with Nintendo on cozy games in Asia for ‘The Sims.’ I see ‘The Sims’ as a significant ecosystem, and a universe of multiple ‘Sims’ experiences that we have to build on.”

While some fans have expressed disappointment the game isn’t going to the traditional sequel game route with a “The Sims 5,” Miele maintains this is for the best for the larger community of Simmers.

“What I wouldn’t want to have happen is you to have to start from day zero and start from scratch and give up all of the things that you have created, give up all of the content that you’ve purchased over the years,” Miele said. “We put out over 85 content packs over the last 10 years on ‘The Sims 4,’ and so resetting that is not player friendly and not a good idea for our community.”

EA’s biggest transmedia project at the moment is the upcoming “The Sims” movie from Amazon MGM Studios and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap, which was finally the “right creative partnership” for a film that Miele says the team has been talking about for “years and years and years.” (“The Sims” video game franchise celebrated its 25th anniversary this year.)

Miele says EA is currently considering significant opportunities for tie-ins with “The Sims” games upon the release of “The Sims” movie.

“Where we sit today, from a technology perspective, innovation perspective, we are in a moment where we can actually co-create content and be a multiplier for each other and have these great experiences for fans,” Miele said. “It’s going to be so full circle and so fulfilling to bring content in a linear way and an interactive way, simultaneously, and even have it adapt to fans and how things are going. When we have a couple of ideas about how we would go to market with a movie and a couple of different expressions, I just think the opportunity is so ripe.”

Regarding the potential to adapt the “Apex Legends” franchise for TV or film, Miele hints that players “don’t have all the backstory, the history, and there’s just rich worlds and rich history with these characters and these legends that can come to life through linear media and partnerships,” adding: “We’re pretty motivated to do that, and doing it in a way that really respects and upholds the brand and the franchise.”

Following the cancellation of EA’s planned “Black Panther” game this May, questions have arisen about the publisher’s plans when it comes to licensed games.

According to Miele, EA’s current slate tied to Disney and Marvel IP includes the upcoming “Star Wars Jedi 3” game from developer Respawn, large-scale mobile title “Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes,” MMO “Star Wars: The Old Republic,” as well as an “Iron Man” video game and “a few others that haven’t been announced yet.”

For Miele, this is all about maintaining a “really strong balance in our portfolio” while forging EA’s future in “massive online communities.”

“As we’re talking about ‘The Sims’ and ‘Apex’ and ‘Battlefield’ and ‘Skate’ — these are significant investments,” Miele said. “There is significant time, energy and focus to get these right and get these platforms right. We’re doing new things with these massive online communities, so when we assess our resources, our priorities, our teams, I think we are striking the right balance of investing in these big online communities with EA’s brands and IP, and while partnering with this incredibly rich, amazing IP for the action RPG category that is still really strong and we are quite confident our ability to execute in that space.”

  • More than 14,000 total entrants, 16 represented games across both lineups and a whole lot of big names — EventHubs’ Evo 2025 preview

More than 14,000 total entrants, 16 represented games across both lineups and a whole lot of big names — EventHubs’ Evo 2025 preview

Evo 2025 is about to be upon us once more and while it may not hit the record-breaking heights of last year’s events, it’s hard to not be impressed at the massive 14,000 total signups across the games represented at this year’s event.

With 16 lineups spanning across the Main Lineup and Extended Lineup, there’s going to be more action at this event than one can even begin to imagine (and lots of side tournaments on top of that too), so let’s do an overview of what exactly is happening for each game this weekend.

This story will be focusing specifically on the event and its competitions, but if you’re interested in what announcements might be incoming we have a rundown of that over here.

    Entrants: 4,228

    Top 8 Seeds: DRX|Leshar, Zeta|Kakeru, FLY|Punk, WBG|MenaRD, Reject|Fuudo, Falcons|NL, Mouz|EndingWalker, 2G|Blaz

Finals Timeslot: 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 3rd at Evo

Street Fighter 6 hits its third year on the Evo main stage with a bang and unsurprisingly leads the charge in entrants this year as well.

Although FLY|Punk won Evo last year and Zeta|Kakeru took home the gold at Capcom Cup 11 earlier this year, DRX|Leshar might be the favorite going into the event after back-to-back premier victories at Combo Breaker 2025 and CEO 2025.

Of course, with more than 4,000 players signed up the talent level is immeasurable so predicting who the top 8 will consist of is a herculean task indeed — but whoever does grab the gold here will not only be crowned the Evo 2025 champion but also gain qualification to Capcom Cup 12 and an Esports World Cup spot, the latter of which the runner-up will also receive.

As usual, Street Fighter 6 will be the grand finale at Evo 2025 to close out the whole event.

    Entrants: 2,521

    Top 8 Seeds: DRX|Knee, DNF|Ulsan, Falcons|Atif, DNF|Mulgold, TM|Arslan Ash, Varrel|Rangchu, Yamasa|Nobi, DRX|LowHigh

Finals Timeslot: 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 3rd at Evo

Tekken 8 comes to Evo 2025 in its second year and while it’s had a rocky start to its second season, developers acknowledged the issues and have been gradually improving the game for its players.

On the competitive side, Season 1 was largely dominated by TM|Arslan Ash who is last year’s Evo champ and also took first place on the leaderboard for last year’s Tekken World Tour rankings, though he ended up faltering at the finals themselves with Varrel|Rangchu becoming the Tekken World Tour champion.

Last year’s leaderboard also saw DNF|Ulsan and DNF|Mulgold with remarkable consistency, with the former also becoming the Esports World Cup champion last year in a dominant showing over Falcons|Atif who has also been an extremely strong competitor since Tekken 8’s release.

The first really big tournament for the game’s second season, Evo Japan back in May, was won by DRX|Knee who has seen a major resurgence recently for Tekken 8 and throughout some social media spats, a match between him and TM|Arslan Ash is basically what everybody is hoping to see.

Of course, there’s a lot on the line for qualification at Evo 2025 as well. It’s a Master+ event on the Tekken World Tour itself and also holds four qualification spots for the Esports World Cup so players have all the incentive to try to push through the grueling bracket to reach those top placements.

With the talent pool deeper than ever and more than 2,500 participants, Tekken 8 is going to be an electrifying showing for sure but the most hyped up finals match would definitely be one between DRX|Knee and TM|Arslan Ash.

    Entrants: 1,576

    Top 8 Seeds: KSG|Xiaohai, DFM|Go1, CAG|Fenrich, Saishunkan|Nemo, Falcons|Kindevu, T1|ZJZ, ONIC|NYChrisG, AG|Reynald

Finals Timeslot: 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 3rd at Evo

Debuting earlier this year, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is making its first appearance at Evo and is actually also the first main stage appearance for Fatal Fury as a franchise.

The game exploded out of the gate with a fierce competition for players across the world trying to grab one of the 16 spots for the Esports World Cup which played out earlier this month.

While many had KSG|Xiaohai pegged as their winner pick, it ended up beng DFM|Go1 who took the crown in the end so it’ll be interesting to see if we can get a rematch between the two here at Evo 2025.

Of course, they aren’t the only top contenders — there are lots of top players from all over the fighting game community who have converged here in SNK’s latest flagship fighter, as you can see from just the top 8 seeds listing, so trying to take the win in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will be an arduous task indeed.

Evo 2025 will be a brutal battleground since there’s a qualification spot for the SNK World Championship at stake — and these finals were announced a few months ago to have an astounding $2,500,000 prize pool so you bet that there are a lot of hungry wolves out for a chance at that life-changing sum.

Although the game has had a relatively stagnant meta since its release (in my opinion because of how much money there is to be won more so than the game’s balance itself) the gameplay has been top-notch and Evo 2025 is sure to be another amazing showing of top level entertainment matches.

    Entrants: 1,508

    Top 8 Seeds: PAR|Daru, RedDitto, Tatuma, FLY|Nitro, PAR|Jack, Kshuewhatdamoo, TSM|Leffen, Verix

Finals Timeslot: 10:00 A.M. on Sunday, August 3rd at Evo

Guilty Gear Strive is still staying strong with more than 1,500 participants here at Evo 2025 even four whole years after its initial release and will be a Sunday main stage game once more as a result.

FLY|Nitro was the champion at Evo 2024 and will be looking to defend his championship title here against some very stiff competition, including reigning Arc World Tour 2024 champion RedDitto, Evo Japan 2025 champion PAR|Daru and Evo 2023 champion TSM|Leffen.

After several years of competition, the playing field is very wide for Guilty Gear Strive and its been diversified further as more and more characters have been added to the game, leading to a fairly high variety in representation at most tournaments.

Since we have yet to see a repeat champion for Guilty Gear Strive at Evo, even counting both the standard Evo and Evo Japan, this might be the year where we get to someone get their second notch on their belt… though with so many players signed up, there are many hopefuls who are going to be standing in the way of that happening as well.

It’s also a Platinum+ event on the Arc World Tour so for players vying at one of those Finals spots it’s more important then ever to perform here.

    Entrants: 936

    Top 8 Seeds: IBSG|Tororo, GS|Fukunaga, GS|Gamera, PAR|Kojicoco, GU|Monarch, PAR|Zane, Avenger|Ryazo, PAR|Aarondamac

Finals Timeslot: 8:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 2nd at Evo

Last year, Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising saw an American player overcome the Japanese invasion as PAR|Aarondamac was the last player standing at Evo 2024.

Since then, however, Japan has retained its power position with IBSG|Tororo taking home the Arc World Tour Finals earlier this year and Kasausagi (who unfortunately is not attending Evo 2025) winning Evo Japan 2025.

While PAR|Zane and PAR|Kojicoco have shown how strong the US is as a region ever since Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising came out, we’ve now seen GU|Monarch and Avenger|Ryazo rise in the ranks as well with both of them making top 4 at the Arc World Tour Finals earlier this year.

This will definitely be a clash of regions as they go up against the aforementioned Arc World Tour Finals champion, but also the prior Arc World Tour Finals champion from 2023 GS|Fukunaga and the champion of the original Granblue Fantasy Versus title at Evo 2022, GS|Gamera.

Japan and the USA are definitely the main regions vying for the title here, but we could also see other regions rise up to take them down so it’ll be an exciting show to be sure.

Much like Guilty Gear Strive, Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising is also a Platinum+ event on the Arc World Tour at Evo 2025 so players will need to bring their absolute A game to get the lion’s share of those points and secure their spot.

    Entrants: 570

Top 8 Seeds: CM|Khaos, DK Express, Ducvader, Locdown, Crizzle, SmoothViper, Gconceptz, Mvc2 Roundhouse

Finals Timeslot: 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 2nd at Evo

Making a grand return after well over a decade’s absence from the main stage, one of the most storied games of Evo history in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will be seeing some proper action at Evo 2025 this weekend.

Last year had Marvel vs. Capcom 2 as a side tournament, which SmoothViper was the champion of, but with a main stage presence and more than 500 participants it’s an entirely different ball game for the game this year.

It’s likely we’ll see old favorites dominating in the game but with such a long time passed from the game’s heyday, it’ll be interesting to see how they fare against each other here in 2025 during the the Marvel vs. Capcom 2 resurgence we’ve shared thanks to the release of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.

Although the most frequent Evo champion for the game Justin Wong has not signed up for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 this year, it’s going to be an intense battle between all of these old favorites that Marvelheads have been cheering on for decades at this point.

    Entrants: 547

    Top 8 Seeds: Senaru, BBB|Defiant, PAR|BigBlack, BNP|Knotts, 2GB Combo, Chobi, BBB|OmniDeag, Ugly|Shaly

Finals Timeslot: 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 2nd at Evo

Last year, Senaru took home the victory for Under Night In-Birth 2: [Sys:celes] at Evo 2024 and he went on to also win the championship at the Arc World Tour Finals earlier this year.

Without a doubt, this makes Senaru the person to beat and as public enemy #1 of the bracket, that’s what everyone is going to be trying to do.

With PAR|BigBlack and BBB|Defiant — the former winning Combo Breaker 2025 and the latter winning CEO 2025 — being some of the most consistent American players all eyes are on them to see if they can put a stop to Senaru’s dominance, but there’s tons of other talent waiting in the wings as well.

Although entrants are slightly down from last year, the gameplay has only been leveling up so this’ll be one for the history books to be sure.

Also, much like the other Arc World Tour titles, Under Night In-Birth 2: [Sys:celes] also has tour qualification on the line here being a direct qualifier to the Arc World Tour Finals.

    Entrants: 377

    Top 8 Seeds: SonicFox, ONi|Kanimani, RBT|Nicolas, PAR|Rewind, RBT|Scorpionprocs, Grr, STG|Onlinecale213, 2G|SnakeDoe

Finals Timeslot: 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 2nd at Evo

The final game of the main lineup, Mortal Kombat 1 may have the lowest entrants but it also has some very concentrated talent looking to take the win this year.

SonicFox was the victor at Evo 2024 and will be looking to make a repeat performance here, especially after taking down Chile’s golden child RBT|Nicolas at the Final Kombat 2024 last year to bring home that victory as well.

Just like for Under Night In-Birth 2: [Sys:celes], there’s a clear frontrunner here and all eyes will be at SonicFox and how to take them down.

Given the level of consistency from these other competitors, though, it’s definitely possible that we’ll see an end to their reign and have a new Evo champion crowned for Mortal Kombat 1 here in 2025.

This is also a Demi God level event for the Mortal Kombat Pro Kompetition so for players who are hoping to get a shot at that Final Kombat prize pool, this is more important than ever.

Moving on, we’ll be listing the statistics, seeds and timeslots for the Extended Lineup games but without detailed writeups. Make sure you catch all of these titles as well as they happen across the weekend as part of Evo 2025’s huge celebration of the fighting game genre we all love.

    Entrants: 358

Top 8 Seeds: CakeAssault, Plup, FaZe|Sparg0, Kusiwastaken, Sophilo, Bbatts, PAR|I0N, Boiko|Stango

Finals Timeslot: 6:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 2nd at Evo1

    Entrants: 247

Top 8 Seeds: J-Anson, CAG|Fenrich, Ruka, Xcaliburbladez, Division, BrkrDave, Uri, GU|Monarch

Finals Timeslot: 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 3rd at Evo1

    Entrants: 236

Top 8 Seeds: Coates|Bas, ChoiBoy, Silentscope, EricTurbo, Dr. B Galaxy B, Señor Payaso, Kilomax, Umthrfkr

Finals Timeslot: 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 2nd at Evo1

    Entrants: 212

    Top 8 Seeds: Akani Shiwapo, Homestay Akira, Y O U, Hydrix|DensetsuSP, MGG|Reorao, DFM|Itabashi Zangief, SF|GentlemanThief, Tenguman

Finals Timeslot: 10:00 A.M. on Sunday, August 3rd at Evo1

    Entrants: 169

    Top 8 Seeds: GHZ|TheGio, Falcons|E.T., LEV|Layec, QAD|Wero Asamiya, Liquid|ViolentKain, Falcons|Tamago, Comitê|PiterErn, LEV|Pako

Finals Timeslot: 5:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 3rd at Evo1

    Entrants: 155

Top 8 Seeds: XBF|ScrubSaibot, Watanabe Shachou, Guppii, XBF|Maki, Bubba000, Royalpsycho, BBoySonicX, Healing Vision

Finals Timeslot: 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 2nd at Evo7

    Entrants: 134

    Top 8 Seeds: OG|KTP, PAR|ZweiNot, Moist|Hotashi, Foo, FF|ElvenShadow, Vogue, Pattheflip, Rude+E

Finals Timeslot: 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 2nd at Evo1

    Entrants: 118

Top 8 Seeds: DaaChronicle, UA|Bass, ThrashHeavy, DD|Roman22s, Raven is Raw, LAGR|Carnitsa, LAGr|Element, WolfSlayerNinja

  • The War Within Patch 11.2 Makes Good on Raid Trash, Magic Comps, and More

The War Within Patch 11.2 Makes Good on Raid Trash, Magic Comps, and More

World of Warcraft: The War Within, the tenth expansion in Blizzard’s long-running MMO, is about to launch its second major patch. Titled Ghosts of K’aresh, patch 11.2 is taking Azeroth’s champions to the destroyed ethereal homeworld of K’aresh.

With the promise of lots of content, major lore reveals, and a final raid boss that’s pitched to be larger than Stormwind City, there’s a lot in store for us players. We got to sit down with Assistant Lead Quest Designer Stephanie Yoon and Senior Game Producer George Velev to talk about all aspects of K’aresh, from raid trash to reward structures.

Our conversation about Ghosts of K’aresh kicked off with a fun topic: raid trash. For quite some time, the amount of raid trash, or non-boss NPCs, in a raid has gotten overwhelming. Even though they’re easy to kill, the amount has reached levels that feel like time is being ultimately wasted on top of being too much of a cooldown after a thrilling fight. That trend doesn’t seem to be changing with the new raid, Manaforge Omega.

But what is changing is the raid renown track rewards. This raid’s renown will reward you at certain milestones with reduced trash. And to put it bluntly, this change feels like it’s an admission that raid trash may be getting overwhelming if it needs to be made a reward to reduce/weaken the amount of trash in a raid over time.

The War Within’s Manaforge Omega raid renown rewards you with reduced raid trash at certain milestones.

    Ghosts of K'aresh Reshii Wraps

Velev, to address the topic of raid trash, first talked about the philosophy behind it. “We do think a lot about the player experience and how it feels to traverse through the content. But also, it’s a lot about what this is supposed to feel like in the game. If you’re going into someone’s lair for the first time, of course, they’re gonna have a metric ton of bodyguards.”

He continued, “We’re also breaking up the amount of time that you have in between bosses. I’m sure some players might enjoy it, but we want to make sure there’s a bit of a break in between so you can hang out on Discord or talk to your friends instead of just focusing on the boss constantly.”

So what about the change from the raid renown track? Blizzard is not just reducing its length from 20 to 15 ranks, but adding a reward that is explicitly designed to reduce and weaken the amount of trash in a raid. Velev said, “One of the purposes of the renown track is to show mastery of the content and accelerate content from time to time. So when it comes to figuring out ways that we can make someone’s raid night faster, the amount of raid trash certainly feels like something that we can tweak and play with.”

That’s fair. Besides the raid skip, reducing the amount of raid trash in Ghosts of K’aresh is a nice change to make raid clearing more efficient, regardless of difficulty. Speaking of the raid, there has been lots of confusion about one of the new bosses in Manaforge Omega, The Soul Hunters, which has oddly been flagged as optional. For most raids, you need to kill bosses in a particular order to reach the final two to three bosses. The only time raids have had optional fights has been Ulduar, and Heroic/Mythic-only encounters, like Sinestra or Ra-den.

The Soul Hunters bosses will drop shoulder tier tokens in the Manaforge Omega raid.

The War Within Ghosts of K'aresh

Velev, in a way, cleared this up. “In my opinion, if it drops loot, it’s definitely required.” This boss does drop shoulder tier tokens, so I’m sure most raids will go after The Soul Hunters to ensure players get their best-in-slot tier piece.

What’s most mysterious about this boss is the use of a third Demon Hunter specialization. Demon Hunter is the only class in WoW that has two specs instead of the usual three (or four in Druid’s case). But in this fight, they have representation of Havoc, Vengeance, and a void-based spec.

Does this mean DHs are next to get a new spec? Not necessarily, according to Velev. “We ended up making some narrative beats in Ghosts of K’aresh around Demon Hunters. So we want to sort of explore that little bit more in the raid.”

Velev continued, “Personally, I always really enjoy raid encounters that are based off of classes or specs. It’s a really good opportunity for encounter designers to flex different muscles. So it’s certainly just a fun exploration on our end to see what’s cool and what’s not. In terms of a new class or spec, we have nothing to announce, but it does sound really cool.”

After our interview, we got the following statement from Velev about the encounter’s ‘optional’ status. “We’ve heard feedback that clarity is needed about the full nature of this demon hunter encounter being optional. To avoid confusion as we inch closer to the season’s start, we’d like to make it clear that while you can bypass this encounter once your raid group decides the rewards from it are not compelling to progress to the end of the raid.”

He continued, “Completion of the encounter will still be required for the purpose of gaining credit toward Hall of Fame status. We appreciate the feedback from players who have jumped onto the PTR and look forward to an exciting start to the season.”

Dimensius may be WoW’s biggest boss to date, but Blizzard assures you won’t need the latest hardware to run it.

World of Warcraft: The War Within - Ghosts of K'aresh Environment

Our final raid topic was Manaforge Omega’s last boss, Dimensius. Not much is known about this fight besides what can be inferred from the encounter journal. All we know is this boss is going to be the largest boss we’ve ever fought to date, possibly larger than Stormwind City. My biggest concern is: How will this fight work on non-top-of-the-line PCs

Velev shared that Blizzard tested lots of computer specs to make sure fights will run well in Ghosts of K’aresh, regardless of hardware. “We have a lot of brilliant and smart engineers on our team. For any single encounter, not just Dimensius, we go through rigorous performance testing to make sure that all PCs of all types can play the encounter.”

Velev continued, giving a little insight into the fight without revealing much. With a fight this massive, we’re not just going to be fighting its void-y whisps or fingernails. “We made sure to listen to the lessons of the past in two major aspects. One was, we’ll be punching a very big thing. The last thing we want to do is have people fighting his toenails for 15 minutes. And we also don’t want it to be a 15-minute fight.”

Ghosts of K’aresh has a new feature designed to help with spell density visualization on-screen.

    Ghosts of K'aresh Environment

Velen added that there’s a new feature coming in Ghosts of K’aresh specifically to help with spell density visualization on-screen. This could be a big help with the sheer size of attacks we’ll be dealing with while fighting Dimensius.

According to Velen, “We’re taking a previous option in the graphic option settings that toggled your framerate depending on performance, and we’re adding a new feature on top of that where you can essentially change how many allied player visuals you can see in raid content.”

“So, for example,” he continued, “you could set it to everything, and you could see all of your friends and buddies’ visual effects. There is a ‘reduced’ setting where you see a little bit less, and there’s an ‘essential’ setting where you see only the critical things from other players. It won’t affect things like Dimensius’ visuals. It won’t affect PvP. It also won’t affect your spells.”

Umbra Essentia is intended to be a first step in tackling the racial ability problem in WoW.

    Ghosts of K'aresh NPCs

Next, we moved on to Mythic+ balancing, specifically regarding the new Umbra Essentia potion, which gives all races the Night Elf racial ability Shadowmeld. For Umbra Essentia, Velev explained that creating it was about giving others more opportunities.

“Over the course of the past couple of seasons, we saw a lot of top-performing groups rely on Shadowmeld for certain strategies. We want to see if we can give others more opportunities to do that same strategy without having to race change and reduce the pressure on group compositions in Night Elves.”

He added that the addition of Umbra Essentia is a first step to tackling the racial ability problem in WoW. “We do want to ultimately do something about this. The last thing we want to do is start updating racials across the board because of just one game mode. Specifically, we’re looking to see if we could take a lighter touch first.”

We then talked about raid buff balancing in Ghosts of K’aresh and how it affects Mythic+. Recently, Monk’s raid buff, Mystic Touch, was increased from 5% to 8% physical damage taken by enemies. It was also quickly reverted because of its effect on Mythic+.

Velev explained why this change happened. “One of the reasons we wanted to actually buff Mystic Touch was in terms of overall performance in raids, not Mythic+. Physical damage versus magic damage wasn’t 50/50. In fact, depending on the environment, it’s usually more like 70/30 for magic to physical. So we wanted to buff Mystic [Touch] more so we could have some parity with Chaos Brand (the Demon Hunter raid buff that increases magic damage taken by enemies).”

He added, “We also wanted to use it to buff and maybe push forward some different metas, this time around, for Mythic+. Maybe something like a physical comp. That being said, we reverted that [change] almost immediately. We want to take different avenues to potentially push up comps like the physical Mythic+ comps, instead of relying on Mystic Touch. So it comes down to a lot of data, a lot of analysis, and players’ feedback to iterate on it.”

The new legendary cloak lets you phase dive into an alternate version of K’aresh.

The War Within - Ghosts of K'aresh NPCs

With Ghosts of K’aresh, the new legendary cloak will also allow us to phase dive into an alternate version of K’aresh. Over time, our cloak will get more powerful, and we will be allowed to do more in phase diving, like mounting up. Is this a case of taking away mechanics we already have to limit us? Or is it a way to reward players over time, giving us more things to do each week?

According to Assistant Lead Quest Designer Stephanie Yoon, it’s the latter. “What is the difference between giving the players what they want to get, but also preserving the experience as we had intended. Like, we are trying to preserve the fantasy of your body turning into an energy form. You’re exploring the world and fighting all these cosmic enemies in this specific way. You’re able to unlock bonuses that change the gameplay week upon week.”

She added that phase diving has evolved greatly since being added to the Public Test Realm. “We started getting in feedback that players felt that phase diving itself didn’t have enough rewarding things for players to explore. And once we heard that, we made a lot of changes. The phase diving feature, when it comes live, is a lot different than what it was when PTR first opened up, and that’s directly due to player feedback.”

The War Within Ghosts of K'aresh Reshii Wraps

Yoon continued by detailing the changes since PTR launch. “We’ve added in a lot of explaining features to encourage players to discover this (phase diving) without having to go to a website to look it up. Another thing we did was we added a whole bunch of achievements that encourage players to explore phase diving, which you can do from week one. So it’s not a time-gated feature.”

Finally, Yoon explained that “There’s what are called phase lost items, phase lost weapons that you’ll be able to discover in phase diving now that allow you to uncover all these transmogs. Once you collect all of them, you get a grand reward. We’ve also shuffled how a lot of those unlocks that you get from the Reshii Wraps make your phase diving experience better. We’ve juiced them up and made them feel impactful every time you earn one.”

The War Within patch 11.2, Ghosts of K’aresh, is poised to be a big one, especially as it closes the first chapter in The Worldsoul Saga. From an exciting new raid to the return of the fan-favorite Ethereals, exploring K’aresh and its impact on us will be exciting. Now, next stop… Midnight!

The $299 Halo smart glasses will remember the names of people you meet

Startup Brilliant Labs has announced a successor to its $349 open-source Frame smart glasses, which debuted early last year with features like AI-powered translations and the ability to identify what you were looking at. Its new $299 Halo smart glasses are priced closer to Meta’s entry-level Ray-Ban models and come with upgraded AI capabilities, including more natural conversations with its Noa multimodal AI agent that can “understand what it hears and sees within its environment and responds with contextually relevant information in real-time.”

Instead of simply relying on audio cues like Meta’s wearables, the Halo glasses use a 0.2-inch color microOLED display that “projects a retro arcade-style UI” into your peripheral vision. There’s sound, too, but it’s delivered through bone-conduction speakers on the Halo’s arms for added privacy. Battery life is rated at up to 14 hours, thanks in part to a low power camera and an AI chip featuring a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU), and while slightly heavier than last year’s Frame glasses, the Halo are still relatively lightweight at just over 40 grams.

Brilliant Labs says that conversations with its Noa AI agent will now “feel natural and intuitive as if speaking with a real person,” thanks to it delivering contextually relevant information based on your environment. Noa also has more control over the Halo glasses themselves, letting you mute the microphone or put them to sleep using expanded voice commands.

For those who find both their memory and eyesight starting to slip, Halo will utilize Brilliant Labs’ new “patent-pending agentic memory system” called Narrative that uses data collected from its camera, mics, and interactions to create a “private and personalized knowledge base” for you. The startup says Narrative will allow its smart glasses to recall the name of someone you’ve met when talking to them again, and even access details from past conversations.

There’s also an experimental new coding feature called Vibe Mode that will let you “create custom applications using simple natural language voice commands.” Noa will generate an app based on your specific needs, such as an alternate mapping utility that’s customized for how you prefer to navigate a city, the startup suggests. Instead of having to dig through an app store and try several options until you find an app that best suits your needs, you can create one on demand that immediately features the specific functionality you need.
